PCOS Clinic

Over the years of treating women with fertility issues one of the most common problems I see is PCOS  - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCO  - Polycystic Ovaries.  Both are caused by a hormonal imbalance and the difference between the two is the presence of common visible symptoms – ‘apple shape’, difficulty losing weight and hirsuitism with PCOS and an absence of these with PCO.  Women with PCO are usually diagnosed after a scan.

In this specialist clinic I work with Helen Gestwicki – the nutritionist with the Edinburgh Fertility Clinic – to minimise the effects of this hormonal imbalance.

One of the most important aspects of PCO/S management is diet.  Studies have found that the incidence of ovulation increases with weight loss and exercise more than it does with use of medicinal drugs such as Chlomid (Chlomifene Citrate).   Helen will work with you to manage your diet and I use acupuncture to help regulate ovulation so that together we should bring you to a regular cycle.

Case Study:

Rebecca had been diagnosed with PCOS and came to see me because she wanted to become pregnant.  Her cycles were long – over 60 days – and erratic.  I explained how to chart her cycle – using a Basal Body Temperature (BBT) chart and with regular weekly acupuncture and later some Chinese herbs, we achieved a 40 day cycle during which she definitely ovulated.  Once this was achieved, Rebecca could time intercourse to coincide with ovulation and she became pregnant after one month of trying.  She now has a very healthy baby boy.
